ABOUT THE COURSE

This course has been specifically designed to teach the skills needed to begin working in schools and develop your understanding of the legislation, relationships and developmental techniques that are required. You will learn about children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare and communication.

An assessor will visit you at work and observe your interactions with children and staff. You will be asked about the way you approach your job and why. This will allow you to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding you have gained in class. You will also collect a portfolio of your activities in your workplace.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Safeguarding the Wellbeing of Children and Young People
  • Communication and Professional Relationships with Children and Young People
  • Schools as Organisations
  • Supporting Learning Activities
  • Promoting Positive Behaviour in Children and Young People
  • Promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • To be volunteering, or working in a school environment, for at least 16 hours per week
  • An Enhanced DBS check

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment is by in-class work, your portfolio, and the results of your observation by the assessor.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Adults - Level 3

If you will be aged 19 to 23 prior to the start date of your course, and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification, you may be eligible for a Level 3 entitlement, in which case your study with us will be free. If you are older, or already have a Level 3, we have many other Level 3 courses that are also free to study. Otherwise, you will have to pay the fees yourself or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

Some courses will have other associated costs, such as for specialist materials and trips. Many of our students are eligible for financial support, see here for details.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

Successful completion of this course can act as a bridge to further study, such as a Foundation Degree, or full-time employment in teaching, youth work, childcare or education welfare.
