Animal Management - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma
About the course
Aged 16-19 and interested in animal care? Want to work in zoos, as a veterinary nurse, or as a scientist designing pet food? This Level 3 Extended Diploma could be just the thing for you.
You will need:
Grade 4 in Science Gade 4 English & Maths
Alternatively, you can have a Level 2 Diploma (at Merit or above) or Higher Diploma in Applied Science.You must also have a good reference from a school or employer, and complete an interview and assessment. Your commitment and interest in the subject will be assessed during the interview process.
The course involves lots of practical work and visits to conservation areas, zoos and farms. You will also do an extended research project. You will study modules in a wide range of animal-based topics, including Animal Health and Nutrition, Animal Biology, Exotic Species, Conservation, Animal Behaviour and Genetics.
Assessment is by practical demonstration in most units, with periodic written exams to demonstrate your understanding.
On successful completion of the course you can go on to study an animal or biology-related subject (such as Zoology) at university. You can also enter a veterinary nursing course, or seek immediate employment within the Animal Management industry.

Helena Stengel came to London wanting to train as an optician after taking the German equivalent of A Levels. She was sponsored to study Ophthalmic Dispensing Theory at City and Islington is now building on her skills and experience by studying a course on contact lenses at the College while working for an independent opticians called The Eye Place in Belsize Park.
She said: “Working in Optics is very rewarding as you are able to give professional advice and expert customer care to clients. You also work a lot with children and are able to identify any eyesight problems from an early age.”
