Meet our staff: Sixth Form College
Dr Mark Madine - Sixth Form College Chemistry and Biology teacher
Mark Madine gained a First Class Honours degree in Biochemistry at Birmingham University, and went on to complete a PhD at Cambridge University where he worked with Nobel Prize winning scientists. His research focused on studying how human cells proliferate, as part of a study looking to help women with cervical cancer get a more accurate diagnosis at an earlier stage of the disease.
Since joining the College in 2005 I have been lucky enough to work with some of the most gifted students in London and a body of staff who have a huge breadth of experience. Students applying to study medicine at University are five times more likely to be made an offer than the average student in the UK. Most of our science students go on to study science related degrees, many at Russell Group universities.
The breadth of subjects taught and the range of enrichment programmes on offer provides an extremely rewarding and academically successful experience for students."
Dr Sally Colston - Sixth Form College Physics teacher
When Sally learnt at school how an electric bell worked, she knew that physics was for her. She studied Physics at the University of Liverpool before working for the British Council. She then continued her studies taking a Masters and a PHD at the Birkbeck University Department of Crystallography. Her research involved using synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques to look at industrial and archaeological materials. A key aspect of this involved analysing cement in order to improve how buildings are made.
I am passionate about learning and helping students undertake experiments in class to the point that they can learn how to do it themselves. Physics is a key subject for so many professions, for example, understanding how air, sound, heat and energy work, which can lead to a number of rewarding careers including engineering.”
