Sports Science - Access to Higher Education
About the course
The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a year-long qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university.
If you are 19+ and interested in sports, nutrition and the treatment of sports injuries, this could be the course for you.
It's geared particularly towards people with enthusiasm and life experience, who don't yet have the necessary qualifications for further study or a career in sports science.
You will be invited for interview, where you will be asked for:
1. A pass in GCSE English (or equivalent). A pass is a C or above pre-2017; or a 4 or above post-2017.
2. Overseas applicants must have scored a 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System, with a minimum score of 5.5 on each skill.
3. A pass in GCSE Maths (or equivalent) will be required before progressing to Higher Education – so is strongly advised before starting the Access to HE Diploma.
4. A genuine interest and knowledge of Sport and Exercise Science.
5. An understanding of how the Access to HE Diploma will lead you to reaching your long-term goals.

Assessment is mainly continuous and geared to the needs of mature learners.
Assessment are designed to start easily get more difficult as the year progresses.
There are range of assessment methods designed to prepare learners for the assessment methods in Higher Education.
The course provides a pathway onto a variety of Higher Education degree courses at Universities around the country.
These include Foundation Degrees and full Bachelor of Science Degrees in:
- Sports Therapy
- Sports Science
- Sports Coaching Science
- Sports Studies
- Sports and Exercise Science
- Sports Psychology

Desiree is a 200m World Youth Champion as well as being the fastest U18 in the world for 200m, and the fastest U20 in Europe over 200m. In 2014 she won Gold in the women’s 4x100m at the European Championships in Zurich.
Whilst competing at elite level athletics, Desiree has studied Sport Science at the Centre for Applied Sciences.
She was bestowed with the great honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron at the London 2012 opening ceremony. Desiree also won the Student of the Year Award for 2013.
