Our programmes are FREE to the most of our applicants.  They run from September 2019 to June 2020.

All courses have started, so spaces are limited, particularly at GCSE where only very strong candidates can be accepted.

We are now seeing applicants by appointment only. Visit our office at the Centre for Lifelong Learning (next to the N4 library) to book your place for one of our advice sessions on a Tuesday from 9.30am.

  • Allow at least two hours for advice, assessment and enrolment. Occasionally you will need to return for another session in order to complete the full process. Please bring a current UK/EEA passport for identification purposes and any recent benefit letters.
  • Make prior arrangements to have young children cared for outside the college. We cannot provide appropriate childcare facilities for enrolment. Only applicants can be given access to rooms where assessments take place. For safeguarding reasons, we cannot have unsupervised children without a responsible, accompanying adult on college premises.

Maths and English courses at City and Islington College

About the course

Whatever your plans for the future, the ability to use English well will really help you. We offer a range of English courses to help you develop the language and communication skills you need for work and everyday life - even if you have been out of education for a while.

From complete beginners to GCSE, there will be a course at the right level for you. The vast majority of our students are not required to pay for these courses.

You will need to take a short test so that we can assess your level and enrol you on the best course for you. Just visit our centre to book an appointment - Centre for Lifelong Learning, 28-42 Blackstock Road, Finsbury Park, N4 2DG.

You will take part in a range of learning activities to improve your use of practical English, including the skills of speaking and listening, reading, writing, and spelling.

Your progress will be monitored in a variety of ways, and we offer a range of qualifications to demonstrate your achievements.

You can progress to further study in a specialist vocational area.

My teachers played a huge role in my progression

Syeda Afaz

Syeda Afaz

Studied: Adult literacy before progressing to study an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences

Destination: Studied a Law degree at the University of Westminster and is now training to become a solicitor at the University of Law

Syeda Afaz arrived in London at the age of 19 from Bangladesh to join her husband and to start a family life. They had two children but the marriage fell apart and divorce proceedings began. Despite this Syeda felt determined to learn English, provide for her children and become an independent woman with her own identity.

She enrolled on an ESOL course at City and Islington College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning in Finsbury Park and progressed to adult literacy, functional skills and took some of her GCSE’s. She never thought she would be able to study for a degree but with her confidence growing she decided to take an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Law at the College. After completing that she studied a Law degree at the University of Westminster and has ambitions to become a property solicitor.

She said: "When I enrolled at the College I was only 24, but I was nervous that there would be just young students there. However, the Centre for Lifelong Learning is so diverse and there are learners of all ages which helped me to settle in a lot.

“My teachers played a huge role in my progression and I was always able to go back to teachers for academic and personal support.”
