My teachers played a huge role in my progression

Syeda Afaz

Syeda Afaz

Studied: Adult literacy before progressing to study an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences

Destination: Studied a Law degree at the University of Westminster and is now training to become a solicitor at the University of Law

Syeda Afaz arrived in London at the age of 19 from Bangladesh to join her husband and to start a family life. They had two children but the marriage fell apart and divorce proceedings began. Despite this Syeda felt determined to learn English, provide for her children and become an independent woman with her own identity.

She enrolled on an ESOL course at City and Islington College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning in Finsbury Park and progressed to adult literacy, functional skills and took some of her GCSE’s. She never thought she would be able to study for a degree but with her confidence growing she decided to take an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Law at the College. After completing that she studied a Law degree at the University of Westminster and has ambitions to become a property solicitor.

She said: "When I enrolled at the College I was only 24, but I was nervous that there would be just young students there. However, the Centre for Lifelong Learning is so diverse and there are learners of all ages which helped me to settle in a lot.

“My teachers played a huge role in my progression and I was always able to go back to teachers for academic and personal support.”
