CELTA Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults

About the course

We offer the course in various modes to suit your circumstances part-time or full-time, evening or day. The online course is offered subject to demand. All our trainers are highly qualified - at least to Diploma and/or MA in Linguistics and experienced, with many years of teaching and training expertise.

The course is suitable for native and non-native speakers with excellent personal use of English. Candidates should have a level of education equivalent to that required for university entrance (e.g. A Levels) or a university degree. Previous teaching knowledge or experience is not required but suitability for the course will be determined through selection tasks and interview. These include tests of written and spoken language as well as language awareness.

The course focuses on teaching and learning strategies for EFL/ESOL and is mainly practically based. You will need to allow extra time for independent study, assignments and lesson preparation outside the taught course.

There is no final exam - assessment is continuous. The main area of assessment is of teaching in Teaching Practice classes with real learners. Additionally, there are four written assignments focusing on language, the learner and the teaching context. Professional conduct is the third area of assessment. Each trainee maintains and submits a portfolio representing their participation on the course and these, as well as Teaching Practice, are inspected by an external assessor from Cambridge ESOL who visits each course.

On successful completion, you will have an internationally recognised qualification as an English teacher, so you can combine travel with work. In time, you may also want to consider progression to Diploma or PGCE in Lit/ESOL.

Benjie Guy Benjie Guy, 30, was working for the BBC World Service as a freelance journalist but had the ambition to teach English as a foreign language. After studying the CELTA course at the College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning in Finsbury Park he achieved his ambition of going to Brazil to teach English.

He said: “Without a doubt teaching English in Brazil was the best six months of my life and I have so many stories to tell. I could not have done this without the course at the College and now I am back in London I am keen to teach students privately and continue to build up my teaching experience.”
