About the course
This course provides the ideal first step to a career in the beauty industry - particularly if you need to top-up your English language skills too.
You need to have Entry Level 3 ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) as well as good communication skills. You will need to carry out an assessment and will be interviewed.
You will develop a range of practical skills, including giving facial skin care treatments, doing manicures and pedicures, and applying make-up.
You will gain an understanding of the day-to-day running of a beauty salon, including reception duties and the importance of following health and safety procedures.
You will receive ESOL support throughout the course.
You will be assessed on the practical work that you do in the beauty salon, as well as observations, an e-portfolio, on-line testing, assignments and oral questioning.
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the NVQ Level 1 Diploma in Beauty Therapy. You can then progress to study a higher level qualification, or broaden your beauty skills by taking related courses at Level 2.

Simone Alalade-Bobb has made it to the University of Bedford to study Beauty and Spa Management Business Honours. She plans after her degree to work on cruise ships using her skills in the Caribbean.
