Art and Design - Level 2 Diploma (UAL)
About the course
Aged 16-18 and interested in the arts? This course gives you the opportunity to work with a wide variety of art and design materials, allowing you to hone your skills and explore new specialisms.
You will need:
- Four GCSES Grade 2
Alternatively, a previous Level 1 Diploma, work experience, and a portfolio of art work will also be considered.
Your interest in the course will be assessed at a formal interview prior to full enrolment.
This course introduces you to key concepts and techniques in drawing, fashion, painting, 3D design, photography, and computer-aided design.
You will develop your English skills through contextual studies and research into artists and designers. You will also develop your maths skills, if needed, through taught classes and practical work.
You can specialise in either an Art and Design or a Fashion pathway, and you will compile a portfolio of work in that particular specialism.
Assessment is by coursework, and through the creation of a portfolio.
Having chosen your specialism and compiled a portfolio, you'll be ready to progress to a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma. Extended Diplomas are equivalent to three A Levels, so this will prepare you either for study at university level or your first job in Art and Design or Fashion.

Sinem was struggling with her self-esteem. As a hard-of-hearing student she struggles to communicate, but her confidence and skills have developed to the point she has now been awarded a £10,000 scholarship to study at the London College of Fashion.
She said: “Before coming to the College I wasn't very happy, but the course, my teachers and my classmates have changed my life.
“On the course I have studied textiles in depth and have experimented and learned new techniques. I love using pattern cutting and garment contraction creating contracted shapes. I am now never afraid to experiment and try out ideas. In the future I hope to own my label.”
