ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is a vocational qualification designed for learners who are interested in pursuing a career in the Health and Social Care sector. The qualification is recognised by employers and universities in the UK and provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for further study or employment in the field of health and social care.

This diploma covers a wide range of subjects related to Health and Social Care, including human lifespan development, health and social care values, communication, interpersonal skills, promoting health and well-being, and understanding mental health. It also includes practical units in which learners will develop their skills in a range of care settings, such as residential care homes, hospitals, and community care services.

This course is suitable for learners who wish to progress to higher education in this field. It is also suitable for those who wish to develop their skills for personal interest or to improve their employment prospects in other fields.

Extended Diplomas have two one-year programmes. You need to finish the first year before moving on to the second.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This course consists of two separate qualifications. In your first year of study, you will work towards the Level 3 90-Credit Diploma. Following successful completion of this qualification, you will be able to progress to the Extended Diploma. Our Extended Diplomas offer equivalent UCAS points to studying 3 A Levels.

To achieve the qualification, learners must complete a series of mandatory and optional units, as well as assessments and practical activities. The qualification is assessed through a combination of coursework and external examinations conducted by the exam board Pearsons.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit or above

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment is continuous throughout the year through completing written assignments and projects as well as performing practical work that is assessed internally within the college.

There will also be some written examinations, assessed externally via Pearson, the BTEC awarding body.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Jennifer Dean-Hill

Jennifer has been teaching at City and Islington College since 2002 as a lecturer in Complementary Therapies. She was given tutorial responsibilities immediately due to her excellent rapport with learners and supportive ethos with learners who were returning to study.

She began her teaching journey in 1998 providing healthy living workshops and seminars in her local youth club working with young people aged 13-21 years. Jennifer later joined the board of directors and was there for twelve years managing activities that were local council-based to improve the well-being of young people in the area.

Jennifer has spent 21 years' experience teaching in Further Education, inspiring, motivating, and guiding learners through BTEC qualifications in Applied Science and Health and Social Care. She is experienced in Biology, particularly Nutrition and Psychology. She delivers across Levels 1-3 and is engaging, dynamic and always enthusiastic.


Behzad Ghorbani

Behzad (Bez) is a passionate and dedicated scholar with a deep-rooted interest in zoology, biotechnology, physiology, cytogenetics, and developmental biology. With a keen intellect and a thirst for knowledge, he has made significant contributions to the scientific community through his research and teaching endeavours. 

Having embarked on his academic journey, Bez joined City and Islington College in August 2016 as an esteemed faculty member. As an educator, he brings his expertise to a range of subjects, including Access to Health and Human Science, Health and Social Care, and Higher National Diploma courses. Through his engaging teaching methods and commitment to student success, he has inspired and mentored countless aspiring healthcare professionals.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Bez remains actively involved in research within his areas of expertise. His work in zoology, biotechnology, physiology, cytogenetics, and developmental biology has contributed to a deeper understanding of complex biological processes and their implications for human health.

His dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and promoting excellence in his field has earned him recognition among his peers. Bez's multidisciplinary background and diverse skill set make him a valued member of the scientific and educational communities. With a strong foundation in various scientific disciplines, he continues to pursue innovative research and inspire future generations of scientists and healthcare professionals. His unwavering commitment to his fields of study and his dedication to teaching have solidified his reputation as a respected scholar and mentor. He introduced three new species of Planarians platworms in 1997 (Cytologia, 1998).


Alex Head

Alex is a dedicated and accomplished college teacher who specialises in the fields of Science, Criminology, Forensics, Health and Social Care, and Policing. With a passion for education and a wealth of knowledge in these areas, Alex has made a significant impact on the academic and professional development of countless students.

He has spent the last seven years working within various secondary schools and colleges across Essex and London. Having taught GCSEs, A Levels, BTEC and Access courses he has a wealth of experience across many different examining bodies. He is now the new curriculum manager of the Health Academy which includes Sport and Exercise Science, Health and Social Care, and Optics. Alex spent 12 years as a serving Metropolitan police detective having worked in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and local proactive Crime Squad.

Alex Head’s expertise, enthusiasm, and dedication make him an invaluable asset to the college community. Through his teaching and learning endeavours, he inspires and empowers students to make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.


Mark Scott

Mark Scott, a dedicated Health and Social Care Lecturer, brings a wealth of expertise and a compassionate touch to the field of education. With a distinguished background, he holds a BA Honours degree in Education and Professional Training, along with a diploma in Teaching and Lifelong Learning.

Mark is renowned for his approachable persona and unwavering commitment to his students' success. His supportive nature creates an environment where learning flourishes. His teaching philosophy is centred on fostering critical thinking and practical skills, ensuring his students are well-prepared for the challenges of the health and social care sector.

Mark draws from his experience of working with young people in care, where he had to sensitively engage with this vulnerable demographic, providing them with both academic guidance and emotional support.

Throughout his career, Mark has exemplified the true essence of an educator – someone who not only imparts knowledge but also inspires and supports students to transform their lives. His dedication to the health and social care field, his approachable demeanour, and his commitment to empowering young people make him a well-regarded figure in both education and the broader community.
