ABOUT THE COURSE

This course gives you a broad understanding of the Health and Social Care industry and the types of career choices available.

The course is studied on-site at the Camden Road campus. You will be assigned a course tutor who will support you throughout the course. 

As part of your weekly timetable, you will have access to our unique skill lab, which is fully set up to offer a realistic working environment. By studying in this lab, you will feel far more prepared and confident for your work placement.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You do not need to have any previous qualifications.

All applicants must have an initial assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment is by coursework over the duration of your study. Each unit has an assignment that is required to be completed by the due date. Assignments are marked Pass, Merit or Distinction. There are no external examinations for this course. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a bespoke Safeguarding training session. 

This course is created to focus on the care sector and includes 'Keeping Children Safe in Education with the 2022' updates. As part of your course will be required to complete a work placement. This placement may be a hospital, medical centre, care home etc.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Adults - Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2


If you will be aged 19+ on 31st August prior to the start date of your course, up to Level 2, then your study with us will be free. You must have lived for 3 years within the EU/EEA/UK prior to the start of your course, you must have lived in the UK before 1st January 2021 and you must have permission to live in the UK for at least 12 months from the first day of learning. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to a Level 2 Diploma or other further study. You can also use this qualification to help you either start a career in social care, or progress in your current employment.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Janet Wright

Janet joined City and Islington College in April 2014 and is an experienced FE lecturer who has been teaching in the curriculum areas of Health and Social and Childcare and Education for many years.

Currently, Janet teaches the BTEC qualifications for both 16–18-year-olds and adult courses in Health and Social Care. Janet holds a BA (Hons) in Education and English and a PGCE Institute of Education.


Olufunmi Sijuade

Olufunmi joined City and Islington College in September 2011 as a Lecturer in Health and Social of which they had the opportunity of teaching on the Public Service course for 2 years. 

Prior to this Olufunmi taught Health and Social Care and Childcare for 5 years in various colleges in London and has also worked with the London Borough of Southwark as an Early, Toy Librarian for 2 years. 

Olufunmi has experience working as a Panel member with a Fostering and Adoption agency in the London Borough of Surrey from the year 2006 to 2021.


Esther Koroma

Esther was with City and Islington College from 2011-2016 and rejoined in September 2022. Esther successfully obtained a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of East London, an MA in Development and Emergency Practice (Human Rights) at Oxford Brookes University and a PGCE/DTLLS at the University of Greenwich.

Esther has a decade of experience in teaching 16+ age groups and has taught a range of courses on BTEC, CACHE, OCR, and Gateway curriculum.  Esther contributes to enhancing learners' critical thinking skills and has achieved increases in achievement and success rates.  Esther finds the concepts studied in the MA in Development and Emergency Practice which includes human right to education; adequate housing, civil society, and social media platform; environment and disaster; and research invaluable learning insights for teaching and delivery. 

Esther has industry experience as a volunteer in assisting and helping vulnerable adults and people living with dementia in residential homes and those with mental health conditions in communities. Other interests of Esther include fundraising, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), advocacy in the alleviation of poverty, democracy, and world affairs.
