Health and Social Care - Level 1 Diploma

This course provides an introduction to health and social care, developing your communication and IT skills, as well as the practical and technical skills needed to work in the sector.

You will study the role of the carer, exploring their responsibilities, identifying the needs of others, as well as understanding the variety of jobs in the industry. You will also get to look more closely at personal care and learn how to create activities and learning experiences for both children and adults.

As part of this exciting course, you will also complete a work placement within a Health and Social care setting. This setting can include care homes, hospitals, medical centres etc. You will also have the opportunity to participate in additional safeguarding training that has been created for the care sector and includes the 'Keeping children safe in Education 2022' updates.

You will need:

• GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 2 or above
• An Enhanced DBS check
• A reference from your previous school/college

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

You will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence, collected from written assessments, presentations, witness statements and practice observation.

Aged 16-18

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

This course will help you to move on to higher-level courses, such as a Level 2 qualification or an apprenticeship.

Olufunmi joined City and Islington College in September 2011 as a Lecturer in Health and Social of which they had the opportunity of teaching on the Public Service course for 2 years. 

Prior to this Olufunmi taught Health and Social Care and Childcare for 5 years in various colleges in London and has also worked with the London Borough of Southwark as an Early, Toy Librarian for 2 years. 

Olufunmi has experience working as a Panel member with a Fostering and Adoption agency in the London Borough of Surrey from the year 2006 to 2021.

Janet joined City and Islington College in April 2014 and is an experienced FE lecturer who has been teaching in the curriculum areas of Health and Social and Childcare and Education for many years.

Currently, Janet teaches the BTEC qualifications for both 16–18-year-olds and adult courses in Health and Social Care. Janet holds a BA (Hons) in Education and English and a PGCE Institute of Education.

Funmi is passionate about developing learners to achieve their potential and has worked as a Health and Social Care Lecturer, Course Leader, Assessor and IQA since 2001. She has worked at various FE Colleges and private training organisations across London and has delivered Level 1 to Level 5 as well as the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care.

Funmi has relevant industry experience in Health and Social Care. She has worked as a Registered Manager in several care homes and managed various Community projects across London.
