ABOUT THE COURSE

A Level Grapic Communication will introduce you to a variety of experiences, exploring graphic communication media, processes and techniques, both traditional and new media. You will look at images and artefacts relating to a range of art, craft and design, from the past to recent times, including examples from across the world. The course will develop your knowledge and understanding of how ideas, feelings and meanings can be conveyed and interpreted, looking at the intended audience and purpose of a work.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Drawing
  • Mark-making
  • Print making
  • Typography
  • Illustration
  • Photography
  • Digital design
  • Animation

You will also develop a critical understanding of contextual sources that support and develop your designs.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE Art and Design, or a related subject*
  • Three further GCSEs at grade 4 or above

If you wish to study 4 A Levels, you will need 7 GCSEs at grade 7 or above, including two at grade 8.

*If you did not study GCSE Art and Design, or a related subject, we will assess your suitability based on a portfolio of work. For help and advice on building your portfolio of work, please click here.

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that A Levels are suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment takes place regularly on the course to provide feedback to develop your visual artwork and written components (through one-to-one support and group critiques of work). The course contains two assessed components - a personal investigation portfolio (60%) and an externally set assignment (40%).

WHAT WILL IT COST?

School Leavers

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, it will be free. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. Many of our students are eligible for financial support when studying at college – please click here for more information.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

A Levels are widely regarded as the standard entry qualification for top universities in the UK, and the rest of the world. Many of our students go onto study for a degree at the university of their choice, with some choosing to progress into apprenticeships or other employment.
