ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. Entry Level ESOL courses are for people who speak English as a second or other language, and who are resident or permanently settled in the UK.

These courses will help you to increase your independence, as well as developing the language skills you need for everyday life, employment and further study.

They take you through Entry Level 1 (Beginner), Entry Level 2, and Entry Level 3 to prepare you for a Level 1 ESOL or vocational course.

Classes run during the week in the morning, afternoon or evening. Courses are a year long, but you can join at various points between September and early March if there are places available.

ESOL courses provide you with a thorough introduction to the English language, covering all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

There are courses that focus on improving reading and writing in English, and some Entry Level 2 and 3 courses also include Maths.

You will also study citizenship and employability.

You must be resident or permanently settled in the UK.

You will need to take a short test so that we can assess your level and enrol you on the best course for you. Just book an assessment or drop in during opening hours (see below).

We need to see current ID along with proof that you have been resident in the UK/EU for the last 3 years. For more information on what to bring with you please see the enrolment section.

Camden Road Centre (Centre for Business, Arts and Technology, 444 Camden Road, N7 0SP)

• Monday 8.30am-5pm
• Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am-7pm
• Wednesday and Friday 8.30am-3.30pm

Your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing will be assessed through examinations, and your tutor will advise you when you have the language skills needed to pass the exams.

Courses cost up to £900 a year for a four-day-a-week course. However, if you are in receipt of income-tested benefits, you may be able to study for free or for a reduced fee. Please bring evidence of any benefits you currently receive, dated within the last six months, to your interview. You will be advised of any reduction in the course fees at the end of your interview.
