Whether you are looking to teach abroad or in the UK, the CELTA course is the most widely known and highly respected training programme for anyone who wants to teach English.
The CELTA programme is administered by Cambridge University and is recognised throughout the world for its quality. This makes the CELTA course the best choice for an initial English teaching qualification.
It is highly regarded by employers in the UK and abroad and will help you land a teaching job in almost any location worldwide.
The CELTA course is a practical course based on real teaching experience, working with genuine English language learners in a classroom setting.
You learn various teaching methods and practice what you learn in a real-life classroom, with guidance and feedback from your teacher trainers.
Our CELTA course is run by a team of experienced educators who provide exceptionally high-quality academic guidance.
There is a maximum ratio of six trainee teachers per teacher trainer, giving you unique individual support and attention from the course tutors.
The course is an intensive programme of study to which you will be required to fully commit. This is a very practical course with a focus on hands-on teaching practice so that upon completion, you will feel confident beginning or continuing your career as an ESOL/EFL teacher with all the skills and knowledge you will need. Many of our students have even gone on to become teachers on the ESOL courses we offer at City and Islington College.
The course focuses on teaching and learning strategies for EFL/ESOL and is mainly practically based. You will need to allow extra time for independent study, assignments and lesson preparation outside the taught course.
Topics covered include:
The course is suitable for native and non-native speakers with excellent personal use of English. Candidates should have a level of education equivalent to that required for university entrance (e.g. A Levels) or a university degree. Previous teaching knowledge or experience is not required but suitability for the course will be determined through selection tasks and interview. These include tests of written and spoken language as well as language awareness.
There is no final exam - assessment is continuous. The main area of assessment is of teaching in Teaching Practice classes with real learners. Additionally, there are four written assignments focusing on language, the learner and the teaching context. Professional conduct is the third area of assessment. Each trainee maintains and submits a portfolio representing their participation on the course and these, as well as Teaching Practice, are inspected by an external assessor from Cambridge ESOL who visits each course.
