CAREER PROSPECTS

ABOUT THE COURSE

This hands-on introduction to the animal care sector will equip you with underpinning knowledge and skills specific to animal care principles and practices, alongside employability units that will prepare you for work in the animal sector. You will also benefit from learning from:

  • Practical sessions in our newly refurbished animal centre
  • Opportunities supporting the care of our animals every day
  • Enrichment activities - trips to the Zoo/ Aquarium/ Farm
  • Tutorial support - pastoral care for you individually as part of a small group
  • Maths and English, if you have not yet achieved grade 4 at GCSE - re-sit opportunities and or Functional Skills alternatives
  • Work experience - both online and in-person 

This course is delivered at the Centre for Applied Sciences.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Caring for and feeding animals
  • Animal health and husbandry
  • Progression planning
  • Being organised
  • Working as part of a team
  • Accommodating and moving animals
  • The land-based sector
  • Growing plants
  • Aquatic environments

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade 2 ideally in Maths and English or above or a relevant Entry Level 3 qualification 

 All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed using a variety of methods including written assignments, practical demonstrations, worksheets, logbooks, presentations and group projects.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

This course will help you to move on to higher level courses, such as Animal Care - Level 2 Diploma, or into other Level 2 Diploma courses in similar disciplines, such as Horticulture, Applied Science, and Agriculture.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Alison Wall

Alison has both current industry experience and over 20 years of teaching in FE. She can amalgamate the two elements of her career into the role of Curriculum Manager of the Animal Academy at City and Islington College. Alison spent 9 years at a previous college working as Head of Curriculum for various teams and then as Assistant Principal.

Alison has dedicated her life towards the care and rehabilitation of animals, working with students who have similar interests with the aim of inspiring them to follow careers that can make a difference. Alison enjoys the challenges that working in FE as a lecturer/manager brings, she deeply enjoys working with students and looks forward to the forever-changing landscape of teaching to bring new skills to the classroom. 

Alison continues to support dog rehabilitation by fostering, rehabilitating, training, and offering dog care as part of her business role. Additionally, Alison owns her own woodland where she hires the land as a dog park for dog owners who need the safety and security of their own enclosed area. Alison remains focused on balancing her 2 roles in working with animals and students to enhance her position as a Curriculum Manager at City and Islington College.


Jade Ebejer

Jade embarked on an exciting journey by enrolling in the BTEC Extended Diploma in Animal Management at City and Islington College. She was just as passionate about animals as you are right now! Jade's dedication and hard work paid off, and she successfully completed the course in 2012. She ventured out into the wide world, gaining valuable experience and expertise in the field.

After ten years of immersing herself in various animal-related endeavours, Jade is now back at City and Islington College, but this time as a lecturer. Jade's specialised area of expertise lies in animal husbandry studying BSc Animal Science at Writtle University. She's all about teaching you the ins and outs of caring for different groups and species of animals.

With her real-life experiences and passion for the subject, Jade will undoubtedly ignite your curiosity and provide you with invaluable insights that only a seasoned professional can offer. So, whether you're interested in exotic animal husbandry, or animal health and disease, Jade is here to guide you every step of the way. Get ready for an incredible learning experience as you embark on this extraordinary journey. Let's dive in together and make a positive impact in the field of animal management!


Jess Thompson

Jess has 11 years of experience teaching animal-related subjects and is passionate about positive motivation in the classroom, as well as in life.

There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing students grasp new concepts and evolve into confident, knowledgeable individuals. Throughout her career, Jess has embraced innovation and believes methods should be dynamic and responsive to the ever-changing needs of students. She is committed to exploring new ways to make lessons engaging, interactive and fun and aims to create an environment where learning becomes a joyful experience rather than a daunting task. Jess loves being able to help students on their journeys and just being a helping hand whether it’s to clarify doubts, offering a listening ear or providing guidance.

Jess is eager to explore new teaching strategies, technologies and methodologies that can enhance the classroom experience. There is always room for improvement and she has learned that improvement is a never-ending process. We can all learn from each other.
