About

Rail Engineering Advanced Technicians provide technical solutions across The Railway. The engineering disciplines cover the following areas of “The Railway” (infrastructure and trains); track (including minor works), overhead line, electrification, signalling, telecommunications, traction & rolling stock and rail systems. Apprentices will undertake the core learning and also specialise in one particular discipline.

Completing this apprenticeship you will gain the skills to:

  • Keep themselves and others safe by leading and demonstrating safe working practices. Understand, reinforce and comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements, including competence and safe access to work locations.
  • Produce a work plan based on safe systems of work that is informed by technical drawings, schematics and programmes of work needed for the development of rail engineering activity. Prepare contingency arrangements to manage change and risk as appropriate. 
  • Undertake and direct a high standard of technical work. Take responsibility for the efficient and effective delivery of technical work activities and projects. Undertake and supervise the operation of equipment and systems.
  • Complete integrity and compliance checks on own work and that of others and ensure appropriate testing is undertaken.
  • Transfer responsibility for assets once work has been completed. Be responsible and accountable for their work and that of others.

You will also have:

  • Workshops and one to one support
  • Continuous assessment and feedback
  • Experienced Rail tutors and assessors 
  • EPA preparation sessions

Who is it for?

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their Apprenticeships. Employers who recruit candidates without GCSE English or Maths at Grade C or above must ensure that the candidate achieves a Level 2 equivalent standard prior to taking the end-point assessment.

Ideally you must have achieved the Level 3 Rail Engineering Technician prior to commencing the Level 4 Advanced Technician role.

Further Information

Included in the training are online or class-based lessons for the Knowledge qualification, observations and work-based assessment to measure the level of competency, regular progress reviews to support and set SMART targets and ongoing support from tutor/assessor throughout the apprenticeship.

Training

During the apprenticeship, you will cover both elements:

  • Level 4 Engineering (Competence)
  • Level 4 Engineering (Technical Knowledge) ... and
  • Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills if needed

End Point Assessment

  • EPA: End Point Assessment (6 Months)
  • Portfolio of  Evidence - 3 different examples of competent performance during the learning period
  • Occupational Competence Validation Interviews - An online interview with an EPA assessor and Professional Engineering Institutions 
  • (PEIs) will also assess the apprentices’ competence against professional standards for an Engineering Technician (EngTech)
  • Portfolio of evidence - Employer confirmation of the apprentice’s competence at work

Future Opportunities

This is a Level 4 Apprenticeship. On completion of apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant Professional Engineering Institutions.
