Training as a Pharmacy Apprentice at St. James Pharmacy

"During my time as an apprentice, I have greatly improved upon my counter skills and I have also learnt how to work efficiently and accurately, especially when dispensing prescriptions.

I conduct various duties at my place of work and the best way to describe a typical day is that it is a fast paced environment. At the start of my shift in the morning, I would go through each and every prescription from the day before to ensure that they have been correctly filled in and completed by customers and I would file them away accordingly. I would then have a look to see what blister packs (multi-compartment compliance aids) need to be prepared and made for the day. Near to lunchtime, I would contact Doctor surgeries to enquire about prescriptions and other problems that may need resolving.

The college has been a great source of information during the duration of my apprenticeship and I have always been kept up to date. The college has supported me in a sense where information has been presented to me effectively in the form of emails and telephone calls.

This has been beneficial as I have been aware as to what is happening in college. For example, being notified of when and where my exams would be held at an appropriate times notice.

My plans for the near future is uncertain but it definitely would involve working in a pharmaceutical environment.

I would most definitely recommend others to undertake an apprenticeship as it would help individuals to gain experience and knowledge as to how certain sectors of employment operates."
