Safeguarding and child protection

Safeguarding and child protection at City and Islington College

The College has a duty to provide a policy and procedures, which offer support and protection from abuse for children and young persons aged up to 18 years old, and those deemed vulnerable such as students with learning difficulties and /or physical disabilities.

It is the responsibility of all staff to be aware of the procedures for reporting suspected cases of abuse, disclosure of abuse or abuse of trust.

The designated officer is the College Safeguarding, Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Manager, Ruth Jno Baptiste, based at Centre for Health Social and Child Care who can be contacted by leaving a message on the Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Helpline, 020 7697 1717. In her absence one of the child protection and vulnerable adults’ officers (listed below) will deputise. We aim to respond within one hour of receiving a call.

'Safeguarding is skilfully integrated with the college’s very good arrangements to support students. Students know that college staff are all committed to keeping them safe, and they feel safe. Students’ and staff’s understanding of safeguarding leads to prompt identification of issues and their resolution. Safeguarding is no exception to the college’s excellent work with external agencies, and staff make good use of their expertise to ensure the safety of learners.'

'Staff have provided students with good training on how to keep themselves safe from the dangers of extremism and radicalisation and to prepare them for living in modern Britain. Students’ behaviour and conduct around the college sites and in learning areas are positive and respectful; vibrant displays are around the college of their work from activities to help them develop their understanding further.'

Working in partnership with parents and carers

The Governing Body and staff of the College are committed to creating and maintaining a culture of openness and honesty and strive at all times to work in partnership with parents and carers.

Wherever possible and appropriate we will aim to discuss concerns about students with their parents or carers and inform them if we intend to make a referral to Children’s Social Care.

There may be instances however, when we judge that it is not appropriate to speak to a parent or carer before contacting Children’s Social Care. This would happen when the Colleges Safeguarding, Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Manager, or a Deputy in their absence, judges that a student’s well-being will be compromised if the parent or carer is aware that a referral to Children’s Social Care is to be made.  We will also bear in mind ‘Fraser Competent’ and this will inform judgments and decisions.

'Safeguarding arrangements for high-needs students are effective. Most students that need them have a personal emergency evacuation plan to ensure their safety in the event of an emergency. Teachers and support assistants supervise students working in the college commercial kitchen closely and students are keenly aware of how to protect themselves from potential hazards.'
