Are you interested in the environment, science or geography?

The Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies is a new exciting qualification in which you will learn a broad range of subjects and skills. The environment is the biggest topic right now, and with the sector worth an estimated £90 billion annually, jobs and career opportunities are expanding.

What will I learn in the Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies?

The environment is a very broad subject area. It covers everything from the production of food (horticulture and agriculture), working with animals, studying plants in terms of structure and functions of their parts, a sustainable world, how energy is made and environmental monitoring. In addition to this, you will learn about jobs and careers in the environment sector. What makes our course different is there is a special emphasis on environmental issues in a big city. Living in London gives you the perfect opportunity to learn about issues such as water, pollution and how global warming will affect people in the future.

How can I take the Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies?

Firstly, you need to speak to your school to see if they offer the Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies and if they are working with Islington to deliver it. If your school does, then you should speak to your teachers and Connexions Advisor to see if the Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies is right for you. Once you have decided that you want to take this Diploma you will need to apply for the course which can be done through your school.  The Diploma will not replace your current GCSEs but will allow you to obtain an extra qualification equivalent to a GCSE.

When you start the Diploma, you will come to City and Islington College for one extended day a week, for two years. You will be in a class of students from all over London. When you study the Diploma you will not be in class every day. We believe in taking the theory that you learn in class, and then taking it outside to the ‘real world’ to apply practically.

What happens after I finish my Diploma?

There are many options to choose from, you could continue onto the Advanced Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies, which is equivalent to 3.5 A-levels. Alternatively, you could go onto A-levels in science, geography, humanities or any other suitable subject. There is also a range of vocational qualifications at Level 3, such as a BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management or Horticulture. You may also wish to finish studying and go into employment by starting an apprenticeship.

I've enjoyed the practical side of my courses and hope to become a chartered accountant after completing my studies, says Anthony, who joined City and Islington on the Foundation Apprenticeship programme in accounting. He made excellent progress, moving onto the Advanced Apprenticeship programme and passing all his external tests six months early.
