What is this course all about?
The Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies is an
academic qualification that teaches real world skills. On this
course, you will learn about the importance of sustainable practice
for the survival of the planet. In addition, it will cover
issues such as global warming, food and water supply, population of
the globe, pollution and oil supply.

Who is it for?
This diploma is offered to all students who have finished their
GCSEs. There are three different levels:
Advanced: This is a full Level 3 qualification
taught over two years and is the equivalent of 3.5 A-levels. You
will study a range of subjects from ecology, animal and plant
science, sustainability, resource management, how we influence the
global environment, and working with plants and animals. You will
also work with our many partners around London, including the
Barnes Wetland Centre, London Zoo, Islington Greenspaces and Argent
Development. Students may also get the opportunity to work on
international and local conservation and environment projects as
part of the extended project.
Higher: This is a Level 2 qualification that is
taught over one year and is the equivalent of 7 GCSEs at A*-C
grade. You will study a range of subjects from production of food
(horticulture and agriculture), working with animals and plants, a
sustainable world, how energy is made and environmental monitoring.
In addition to this, you will learn about careers in the
environment sector. You will also carry out your own research
project that has a real impact on the local community.
Foundation: This is a Level 1 qualification
that is taught over one year and is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at
D-G grade. The focus is on the environment sector but the skills
are transferable to other industries and sectors. You will study a
range of subjects from the natural environment, working with
plants, animals and areas of employment within the environment
sector.
What are the entry requirements?
Advanced: A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade A*
– C or above (including Science, English and Maths) or BTEC First
Diploma in Applied Science with a Merit or above (including Level 2
qualification in English and Maths e.g. key skills).
Higher: A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D or
above (including English and Maths) or a BTEC Introductory Diploma
in Applied Science with a Merit or above (including Level 1
qualification in English and Maths e.g. key skills).
Foundation: A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade
E or above, or entry Level 3 (preferably including Science, English
and Maths).
What can I do after this course?
With the Advanced Diploma, you are able to progress onto
university into many subject areas, including (but not limited to)
environmental science, ecology, zoology, botany, veterinary
science, veterinary nursing, biology, geography, humanities,
agriculture, horticulture and other related subjects. You may also
choose to enter employment from an Advanced Diploma either through
an apprenticeship or by going straight into a job.
From the Higher Diploma, you may continue studying the
environment at the Advanced level, go onto A-levels, another
Diploma in a different area or an appropriate vocational
qualification such as a BTEC National. There are also opportunities
to enter employment through an apprenticeship or by going straight
into a job.
Progression from a Foundation Diploma could lead you to the
Higher Diploma or into a job.
