Additional learning support

We all learn in different ways. By recognising, valuing and responding to differences in the ways people learn, we can improve the quality of everyone’s learning.

  • When you apply, please let the admissions team know about any extra support needs you may have – such as disabilities, learning difficulties or help with basic skills. We can make sure that support is in place when your course starts.
  • If you have dyslexia, our specialist tutors can assess your needs and prepare a plan to support you.
  • We help visually impaired and hearing impaired students in partnership with organisations such as RNIB and the City Lit Centre for Deaf People and Speech Therapy.
  • We arrange extra support with English and maths through workshops or individual tuition.
  • We negotiate with exam boards to make special arrangements where necessary.
  • We provide specialist equipment including voice recognition technology, text enlarger software, and adapted computers.
  • We have full wheelchair access on all sites.

The Support for Learning Team

The Support for Learning Team covers all College centres to make sure support is organised for those who need it. Examples of the types of support available:

  • BSL and communication support for deaf students
  • Note takers and specialist software for students who are blind or visually impaired
  • Support workers for those with medical or physical support requirements
  • Readers and extra time in exams for students with dyslexia
  • Individual support for students with mental ill health

Students who have sensory or physical difficulties can have access to resources such as magnifiers, dictaphones, and in some cases a laptop computer.

Juan Alvarez

It seems that we are learning new things every day, says Juan, who is on the Medical Science BTEC. I particularly enjoy the practical work and have had the opportunity to do work experience at Barts Simulation Centre. We've also had the very valuable chance to take part on one of Oxford University's pre-med courses, which was really interesting. I would recommend the College because it's well-known and has high academic standards, and because being here has given me ideas on how to achieve my goals in studying medicine at university.
