Reading Ahead Islington Borough Awards29 May 2018
City and Islington College students from across sites attended the Islington Borough Awards ceremony at the Town Hall on 23rd May to celebrate their participation in this year’s Reading Ahead (formerly the Six Book Challenge), the nationwide initiative run by the Reading Agency to promote reading for pleasure.
They were joined by members of the public who had enrolled through Islington libraries and enjoyed an inspirational performance by the poet Paul Lyalls before being presented with their certificates by the Mayor of Islington, Una O’Halloran. Two of the students present were also lucky winners of £25 vouchers in a prize draw that followed.
Promotion of Reading Ahead by the five college libraries has grown by the year, helping to put the borough on target this year to earn the Reading Agency’s Gold Award for 150 completers. Students who have completed the challenge also attend separate presentation ceremonies across the college sites in recognition of their involvement.
Feedback given by students in their reading diaries reveals just how much they have enjoyed the challenge and would encourage others to take part, with comments including “I love reading - it is a great escape” and “Reading Ahead motivated me to pick up books more often to read the next chapters!”
The successful conclusion of this year’s Reading Ahead follows a programme of recreational reading promotion by the libraries across the college which has seen an increase in issues and renewals at some sites against the national library trend.
