Mayor Presents Supported Learning Students' Awards

11 July 2017 Mayor Presents Supported Learning Students Awards

Islington Mayor Councillor Una O’Halloran visited the City and Islington College Centre for Lifelong Learning, in Finsbury Park, to attend the end of year celebration for Supported Learning students.

Following a drama performance by Drama students on internet, road and cashpoint safety, the Mayor presented certificates of achievement to the 30 students, who have a range of moderate to severe learning difficulties.

Cllr O’Halloran said: “This is such a wonderful place and I have been so impressed by the students’ achievements and the commitment of the staff. If I had a young person in my family who had a learning disability, I would want them to come here. I feel very passionate about ensuring that all young people and adults have opportunities to learn. It’s not just about the academic qualifications or vocational skills that they learn; it’s also about the social side and the friendships that they develop.”

Tharek, aged 19, who performed the role of a safety officer in the drama showcase, said he wanted to continue his drama studies next year.

“My dream is to play Prince Charming in a pantomime in future,” added Tharek.

Helen Kent (Director of Centre for Health Social and Childcare, Health Social and Child Care) said: “I’m really proud of the achievement of our Supported Learning Students. It is fantastic to see how the students have grown and progressed through-out their journey at college. I appreciate very much that the Mayor Una  O'Halloran has been able to attend the award ceremony and present the certificates. The college is an integral part of the local Islington Community”

Head of School Maria Roye added: “It means so much to our learners and the college staff. The learners were so excited to meet the Mayor and receive their certificates.”
