Inspiring Islington mum to pursue law degree31 July 2015
A City and Islington College student is celebrating gaining a place at the University of Law after a dramatic career change.
Bonnie Ritchie, 27, secured the place at the university after studying a Humanities and Social Science - Access to Higher Education Diploma at the College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning in Finsbury Park.
Bonnie has managed to achieve all this while being a single parent with two children.
“It is very hard to juggle being a parent, working and gaining an education”, she said. “However, I don't use this as an excuse because if you have the right support and motivation around you nothing is impossible and you can reach your goals.
“Being able to gain a place at a reputable university like The University of Law makes all the hard work worthwhile."
“There is a lot of stigma around young parents not working or having an education, but I have refused to be that parent.”
Bonnie struggled to focus on education while growing up and had her first child at the age of 18. Yet she never lost sight of her ambition to study law. Now after reaching university her ambition for the future is to become a barrister.
She said: “I have always been fascinated by the courtroom and how it operates as well as wanting to help people and make a difference. I had been out of education for 10 years, so returning was shock to the system but my teachers at City and Islington were very supportive.”
To help fund her return to education Bonnie took out a Government funded 24+ loan which covers the College’s course fees. If Bonnie goes on to complete a degree she will not have to pay a penny of the loan back.
She said: “The College offered the perfect course for people in my position. I was able gain help with the fees through the 24+ loan, which was a huge help and made reaching my goal that much easier.
“Being able to gain a place at a reputable university like The University of Law makes all the hard work worthwhile. I still cannot believe I’m finally going to university.”
City and Islington College has a partnership with the University of Law which means that students who pass an Access to HE course with tutor recommendation are guaranteed a place on the LLB (Hons) Law or BA (Hons) Business degrees.
