Heathrow Animal Reception Centre training for students15 December 2016
In June 2016 twelve Animal Science students attended a bird of prey training day at Heathrow Animal Reception Centre. Some were there with aspirations of becoming bird keepers at zoos and others to conquer their fears of working closely with large, powerful raptors.
The centre currently hosts four training events per year for our learners with other courses including ‘Working with Exotic species in the Animal Industries’.
These days have proven to be a huge success with the learners and many go on to discuss their experiences in their UCAS personal statements or job applications when looking for animal-related employment. The same training events are delivered to the RSPCA as well as emergency services so they have a reasonable level of competence should they ever need to handle animals.
Each year since 2013, Animal Science department students have been given the opportunity to partake in professional training days hosted by the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, run by the Corporation of London. These have been offered to our students at a special subsidised rate and those in receipt of financial support have their costs covered by the LSF.
