College partnership to train next generation of legal services apprentices17 July 2015
Teachers at City and Islington College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning are set to begin training the next generation of legal services apprentices through an innovative partnership with the University of Law.
The initiative will give the next generation of aspiring legal professionals a deeper understanding of the industry, and allows them to earn while they study for their legal qualification. Another seven apprentices from the London Boroughs of Harrow and Barnet and Islington will commence their training over the coming months, after employees from the London Borough of Hillingdon began their training this month.
Technical training and the completion of Chartered Institute of Legal Executives qualifications (CILEx) is combined with on-the-job learning. In a unique model of collaboration between the FE and HE sectors, apprentices will receive formal training for one day per week at ULaw’s Bloomsbury Centre with teaching from tutors at City and Islington College, a partner FE College of ULaw, and one of the Capital’s leading FE providers. On the other days students will work in the legal services departments at their local authority.
Apprentices will be evaluated through a mix of on the job performance and academic assessments, all designed to develop the skills and qualities that the apprentices will need to succeed in the competitive legal sector.
Grant Glendinning, Centre Director at City and Islington College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning, said: “We are very proud to be part of this initiative. City and Islington College has an excellent reputation for the quality of teaching and learning it provides. Apprenticeships are a key priority and this partnership reflects our commitment to increasing the life chances of Londoners by helping them gain the skills and knowledge to progress to employment.”
Alan Woods, Director of Apprenticeships and Vocational Education, ULaw, said; “We are delighted that the London Borough of Hillingdon is the first to embark on this partnership with ULaw and City and Islington College to provide Apprenticeships for its employees. The initiative is a ground-breaking way to attract and nurture young talent and reflects ULaw’s commitment to supporting a range of Apprenticeships as an alternative path into law, promoting greater access to and diversity within the profession.”
