City and Islington College has teamed up with Weber Shandwick, one of the world’s leading global communications and engagement firms, to inspire young people from diverse backgrounds to consider a career in public relations.

The partnership will be launched at an event on 11 October 2017.

Keynote speakers will be Colin Byrne, Weber Shandwick’s Chief Executive Officer, UK & EMEA, and London-based media entrepreneur Jamal Edwards. Both will provide inspirational insight to City and Islington students on how to make a start in the public relations industry and on which skills recruiters are currently looking for.

The partnership, the first of its kind, aims to raise awareness of the variety of rewarding careers in public relations available to students with a variety of interests and backgrounds.

This initiative will form an on-going programme of activities ranging from CV clinics, inspirational talks given by Weber Shandwick experts and hosted days at the Weber Shandwick offices to enable students to see the business in action. Students will be notified of job opportunities under the Weber Shandwick Apprentice Scheme along with internships and work placements.

Grant Glendinning, Interim Principal at City and Islington College, said: “At City and Islington College, we are committed to providing learners with a range of employment and work experience opportunities that will enhance their skills and enrich classroom learning. Through this innovative partnership, students will gain an invaluable insight into how a global PR organisation operates, and provide a pipeline of future talent for Weber Shandwick.”

Gina Ramson-Williams, Group Talent Director EMEA, said: “We are deeply committed to cultivating a multicultural workforce from all social backgrounds with a variety of skills and specialisms. We continue to champion diversity in our industry and remain dedicated to encouraging people from all backgrounds to pursue a career in public relations. Developing relationships with local colleges such as City & Islington is a great example of how we can help students build a network and see that a career in the public relations field is both attainable and fulfilling.”
