What is the course about?

This degree-preparation course combines academic study and English language tuition. Successful completion of the course guarantees you entry onto undergraduate degrees at City University in the following areas: Actuarial Science, Business, Informatics, Economics, Engineering and Law.

Who is this course for?

The Foundation Programme is for overseas, non-European Union students whose high school qualifications are not recognised for direct entry onto a degree programme at City University. You must be 18 years of age or above on the first day of the course.

What do I need to get on the course?

You will need an English Language qualification that is equivalent to, IELTS 5.5 if you wish to progress onto a degree in Actuarial Science, Business, Management, Law or IELTS 5.0 for other degree programmes. In addition, good high school marks and a Student Visa for the full academic year.

What will I study?

The first semester comprises the following compulsory core modules:

  • Academic Study and Research Skills
  • English Language and Communication
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Mathematics
  • You will also take a subject-specific elective module depending on your chosen degree programme:
  • Economics – for students who wish to progress onto a Business or Economics degree
  • Science, Technology and Applications – for those wishing to progress onto a Computing or Engineering degree
  • Law – for those who wish to progress onto a Law degree.

In the second semester, you will continue with the four core modules and your first elective module. You will also start a second elective module relevant to your degree programme:

  • Quantitative Methods for Business – for Business and Economics students
  • Mathematics for Engineers – for Computing or Engineering students
  • Sources of Law – for Law students.

What qualification will I get?

You will receive a certificate of achievement, showing your results for each module.

What can I do after the course?

After successful completion of the Foundation Programme you may progress onto one of the following undergraduate degree programmes such as, Actuarial Science, Business and Management, Economics, Engineering (excluding Civil Engineering), Informatics Mathematics, Law or  International Politics at City University, or another institution.

How much does the course cost?

The course costs £7,622 (2009/10 price) and you will be required to pay at enrolment. This includes your tuition but does not include any accommodation, living or travel expenses.
