Optical Retailing Apprenticeship
About the framework
The Optical Retailing Apprenticeship provides the skills and flexibility required for employment in a range of organisations, including large stores run by one of the major optical retailers, outlets run by regional groups, and independent practices/groups with one or more branches.
Apprentices will develop their competency across a wide range of skills, including dealing with all aspects of basic visual requirements, supporting the optometrist and/or dispensing optician, assisting with contact lenses and dispensing glasses, advising individuals who are partially sighted, and performing core administrative functions.
Apprentices will cover the following compulsory units:
- Monitoring and solving customer service problems
- Supervising optical clinic
- Providing information and advice to customers in a retail environment
- Health and Safety guidelines
Apprentices will choose from optional units, including:
- Selling optical products
- Practical experience in frame and lens measurements
- Deployment of optical practice resources
- Record keeping
There are no specific entry requirements for this apprenticeship.
An apprentice’s practical competence will be assessed through real-world exercises.
Further study and assessment may be required in Functional Skills at Level 1 in English, Maths, with the possibility of ICT.
