Laboratory and Science Technician Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship Laboratory and Science Technician

About the framework

This Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship is for scientists just starting out in their career, offering the first step to more senior positions in the future.

Laboratory and science technicians undertake a range of roles, including supporting research scientists in industry and universities, supporting teaching in schools, colleges and universities, and working in hospitals supporting biomedical scientists.

It is estimated that by 2016 there will be a need for a further 50,000 newly-qualified laboratory and science technicians in the UK.

This apprenticeship is for school leavers and those seeking their first job, who have five GCSEs at grade C, or equivalent (including Level 2 Laboratory and Science Technicians Apprenticeship).

Apprentices must be employed as a laboratory technician for at least 30 hours per week and paid at least the minimum wage. They will need to attend college once a week.

The apprenticeship takes 24 months to complete, assuming successful completion of assessments. Regular meetings between the apprentice, supervisor and a college assessor will take place at the workplace. The apprentice will also be observed in the workplace regularly by an NVQ assessor.

The apprentice will take an Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (QCF) and Level 2 Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT whilst at college. The apprentice will complete the Edexcel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Education Science pathway, Industrial Science pathway or Analytical & Process Science pathway) while at work.

It should be noted that achievement of some of the criteria on the NVQ can go towards completion of Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) status.

Employers can recruit apprentices themselves (they must place a copy of the advertisement on the National Apprenticeship Service Vacancy website) or they can use the services of the Technicians Apprenticeship Service (TAS) to recruit and, if need be, administer salary payments.
