If you are unsure about what level is right for you, the table below gives you information about general entry criteria for each course level. We would advise that you also refer to the individual course pages for the entry criteria specific to the course you would like to study.

Entry Level
  • Entry Level Award
  • Skills for Working Life
  • Skillsbase (supported learning)
  • ESOL/EFL
  • No previous qualifications. Applicants must have a good reference interview and assessment.
  • As a part of the interview process the applicant’s reading and writing skills will be assessed as well as their commitment and interest in the subject.

This can lead you to a Level 1 course

Level 1
  • BTEC Level 1 Course
  • NVQ Level 1
  • Foundation Course
  • ESOL/EFL
  • City and Guilds
  • Entry Level qualification (including Entry Level 3 Skills in English and Maths) or GCSEs mainly at grade E.
  • Your commitment and interest in the subject will also be assessed during the interview process.

This can lead you to a Level 2 course

Level 2
  • BTEC Diploma
  • NVQ Level 2
  • Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • AAT
  • ESOL/EFL
  • City and Guilds
  • Mainly 4 GCSEs at grade A* - D or a Level 1 qualification (with a suitable level of English or Maths at key skills or Functional Skills).
  • Related Level 1 qualification

This can lead you to a Level 3 course

Level 3
  • A Levels
  • 4 GCSE subjects at grade B or above and at least 2 more at grade C or above, including English.
  • You must satisfy the subject entry requirements

*We will consider applications where students are predicted five GCSE subjects at grade A*-C including a grade C in English Language.

  • NVQs
  • Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Foundation Diplomas
  • 4-5 GCSEs at grade A* - C including English or relevant Level 3 qualification
  • You must satisfy the subject entry requirements
  • Access to HE Diploma
  • Level 2 English and Maths • 4-5 GCSEs at grade A* - C including English or relevant Level 3 qualification
  • You must satisfy the subject entry requirements

This can lead you to  number of progression routes including:

  • Higher  Apprenticeship

Level 4
  • HNCs
  • Level 3 qualification
  • You must satisfy the subject entry requirements
Level 5
  • HNDs

  • BA/BSc Degrees
  • Top-up Degrees
  • Level 3 qualification such as Extended Diplomas, 3 A Levels or Access to HE Diploma

This can lead you to Postgraduate Degree study or employment.
