About the course

Continue your study of Spanish in this wide-ranging course that touches on many aspects of Spanish culture and the wider Spanish-speaking world. Apply logic and creativity and make the language your own.

  • You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
  • In addition, you must have at least grade B in GCSE Spanish. Individual cases will be considered if you have a bilingual background in Spanish or Portuguese.

International students:

  • Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
  • IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.

In the first year you will study a range of topics, including youth culture, health, environmental issues, education and employment. You will take a speaking exam and an exam in listening, reading and writing skills.

In the second year you will develop your knowledge of language and culture by studying international events, ethical issues, literature and the arts. Assessment will include an oral exam plus essay writing and translation.

Assessment is by oral and aural exam, plus written and translation tests.

Language skills are highly prized by both Universities and employers. Good results in your Spanish A Level could see you study Spanish or Modern Languages at University. Particularly fluent speakers can start using their skills as translators or copywriters straight away.

For one of her A Levels, Bianca Constantin took Spanish. She achieved an A and is now studying International Relations and Spanish at Leeds University.
