Skills for Health and Social Care - BTEC Level 2 Diploma
About the course
If you work in Health and Social Care and want to push yourself up the next rung of the career ladder, this course is for you. It gives you a good grounding in the industry, the types of career you can have in it, and the kinds of issues that Health and Social Care looks to address.
- There are no formal entry requirements, but it would be an advantage to have a Level 1 qualification in a related subject or equivalent experience (e.g. work experience as a Health Care Assistant).
- You will need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check which costs approximately £50.
- You will need to pass an online assessment and come to an interview prior to full enrolment.
The purpose of the course is to give you a broad overview of Health and Social Care in a social and professional context. You will study 15 units, including Introduction to Communication in Health; Social Care and Young People's Settings; The Role of the Health and Social Care Worker; Principles of Safeguarding and Protection in Health and Social Care.
Assessment is by coursework over the duration of your study.
You can progress to a Level 3 Diploma in Social Care or related field. You can also use this qualification to help you either start a career in Social Care, or progress to a more responsible position in your current employment.

Studied: Diploma in Health and Social Care
Now working as a Senior Nursing Assistant at Guy’s Hospital
Ivone was working as a chef in London and caring for her husband. At the age of 49, Ivone decided that she wanted to return to education and work in the health care sector.
Last year she enrolled on a Diploma in Health and Social Care at the College’s Centre for Health, Social and Child Care. Now she is working as a Senior Nursing Assistant at Guy’s Hospital.
She said: “The decision to come back to the College was completely life changing and the best I have ever made. I had lost my confidence and did not think at my age that I would get another chance to work in the health care profession. I am so happy and I would encourage others who want to study again, but feel afraid, to do it.”
