About the course

This course gives you the opportunity to explore the area of public services and have a future in the sector.

  • GCSEs mainly at grade E or above, including English Language and Maths.
  • Alternatively, an entry level qualification (including Entry Level 3 Functional Skills in English and Maths).
  • Good references and a successful interview
  • An interest in public services.

This course includes a mixture of practical and theory units, such as, studying Public Service Careers, Improving Health and Fitness for Entry into the Uniformed Public Service, Practical Teamwork in the Public Services.

In addition, you will be required to undertake work experience within a Public Service organisation as part of the programme of study, along with Maths and English qualifications.

Assignments are used to assess the Public Service courses work along with practical assessments and observations of participation. Completion of a work experience log book and the relevant English and Maths exam Outstanding attendance and punctuality are required.

You will be able to progress onto Study Programme in Public Services level 2 once you have completed the Level 1 programme. You may want to change direction and apply for another vocational programme. You may want to do an apprenticeship programme You may want to go into full time employment

Studied: Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

Destination: Studying Nutrition at the University of East London

Rubena came to City and Islington College from one of the College’s partner schools, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.

After really enjoying the psychology modules on the course, she decided she wanted to be a dietician. Achieving distinctions, she now has a place to study Nutrition at the University of East London.

She said: “I want to study Nutrition in order to be able to educate people to improve their habits. This course has inspired me and has given me clear direction.

“After I have graduated I would like to work in a job where I can go into schools and help educate young people on how they can improve their eating lifestyles.”
