Psychology A Level
About the course
Why do individuals behave the way they do? Why do entire cultures have such diametrically opposed attitudes to social issues from each other? This exciting and inspiring course introduces you to common concepts in human psychology, while also training you how to plan and conduct your own research.
5/C in English Language; 5/C in Mathematics; minimum one grade 5/C in Science. If you are studying Triple Science you need at least a grade 5/C in Biology.
This is a wide-ranging course covering topics such as "nature vs. nurture", the influence of infant-caregiver relationships on people's lives, how our memory works (or doesn't). You will also learn about the role of biology in influencing our behaviour, set against psychological explanations for mental health issues from depression to phobias. In addition, you will study how culture and gender influence our ways of thinking. Throughout the course you will be learning about how to plan, conduct and analyse research in psychology.
Assessment is by classwork, key assignments and three final exams at the end of the two-year course.
Psychology equips you with a range of skills and knowledge, which are good preparation for degrees in a wide variety of Science and Social Science courses. It is an excellent subject for developing your ability to think critically and analytically about social issues.
