Politics A Level
About the course
This two-year course gives you an understanding of the workings of the British political system, an in-depth analysis of political ideologies and global politics including international relations. The course focuses on the extent to which governance in the UK is democratic. We ask what is freedom, how is it best promoted and protected and do we even need a government at all? A Level Politics is interesting, engaging and full of debate and analysis.
You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
In addition, you must have:
• Grade 5/C or above in GCSE English Language.
• At least a grade 6/B in one other written GCSE subject e.g. History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature, Business, Media Studies, Religious Studies (full course).
• Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
• IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.
In Year 12 we start by studying democracy and participation, party policies and ideas, elections and voting behaviour. We also look at how the British system operates and whether the constitution needs reform. Later in the year we begin to examine liberal and conservative ideology. In Year 13 the course continues with a discussion of socialist ideas and then focuses on global politics.
Three exams at the end of the second year.
Taken as one of three A Levels, this course qualifies you for University or another Higher Education institution.
Careers Advisers have given me excellent direction
Studied: A Levels in Economics, History and Politics
Destination: University of Cambridge to study Law
City and Islington College A Level student Essak Miah has won a scholarship to study at Cambridge University after excelling in his studies, gaining one A* and two As.
“I am very happy with my results as I am now going to Cambridge University to study Law. I am being sponsored £15,000 by international law firm Trowers & Hamlins for my degree.
He said: “The College has really helped me secure this funding and the careers advisers have given me excellent direction. I come from a working class background; some of my family have been to university, but no one has had an opportunity like this so I am very proud.
“I want to become a lawyer after University and I have already gained a lot of experience at law firms in London. I would really recommend others to come to the College as the teachers are extremely helpful, but I have also really enjoyed independent learning.”
