About this course

As a learner on this qualification in Access to HE Diploma in Politics and International Relations (Humanities and Social Science) you will be offered a coherent, integrated and supported year of study through which you will gain the knowledge, awareness, skills and confidence necessary for successful undergraduate study in a range of Humanities and Social Science related progression routes.

The qualification aims:

  • to provide HE progression opportunities for adults who, because of social, educational or individual circumstances, do not have the necessary qualifications;
  • to give learners a general introduction to the basic concepts, methods, and key areas of knowledge within the Humanities and Social Sciences and offer a coherent and stimulating framework within which they can broaden their intellectual outlook and make connections between subject areas;
  • to help learners to develop and consolidate the various skills required to enable them to cope successfully with the demands of undergraduate study and to become independent, self-directed learners;
  • To establish a positive and supportive learning environment within which learners can build their confidence through successful learning and the sharing of their experience.

If you successfully complete the qualification you will achieve a QAA recognised Access to HE Diploma.

You should have or be working towards GCSE Maths & English at C Grade (Grade 4) or equivalent. An equivalent for example could be - Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English. You will also be invited in to do assessments in Literacy and Maths; if successful you will be invited to interview or given the opportunity to do our intensive pre-access course.

If you do not have Maths and English you must have a firm offer from the university of your choice that they are willing to accept you with just the HE Diploma (as long as you pass our assessments and obtain an offer from us.

You will learn a mixture of units on the Politics and International Relations Course that will aid you in your journey to university and career in this ever changing field.  On a typical course you may be studying units such as:

Politics and International Relations:  Politics and Power, Political Ideologies, Social Democracy and Thatcherism, Theories of International Politics, and China and America.

Law: The English Legal System, The Judiciary, Human Rights, and Defamation and Mooting

History: America’s Vietnam War, Israel-Palestine, and the Collapse of Communism

Study Skills: Note Taking and Note Making, Essay Writing, Writing Standard English, Exam Skills, Reading and Comprehension of Texts and an Extended Project – A 3000 word essay investigation based within your subject area.

Assessment will be a mixture of coursework, presentations, essays, reports and exam based units to help you become more familiar with the types of assessment you will get at university. 

The learners next progress to Higher Education at University,  either within City and Islington or an external  provider, to study Politics and International Relations , History or Law as well as a range of combined and related degrees. ​
