This 1 year top-up degree course prepares you for a career in physical education or sports coaching.

If you're interested in multisports or elite sports coaching, mentoring and teaching young people, or youth and community development, this course could be for you. It is for those who have already gained 240 credits from an HND, Foundation Degree or equivalent and wish to 'top-up' to an Honours Degree. Offering the right balance between acquiring knowledge and developing practical skills, the course is tailored to today's physical education and coaching sector.

You will need:

  • Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent (240 credits) in a physical education, coaching or sports science-related subject
  • GCSE English language and Mathematics at Grade C (or equivalent) or above.
  • Level 1 sports governing body coaching qualification
  • A clean Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) record (formally CRB)
  • Students for which English is a second language are required to pass the IELTS test achieving a minimum of level 6.

This course provides the knowledge, skills and experience you need to pursue a successful career in physical education and/or sports coaching. As well as developing an understanding of the requirements of working in the sector, you will have opportunities to apply the skills you learn and gain valuable practical experience of coaching Multisports through work placements in schools, colleges or sports clubs.

You will learn in a multi-purpose sports hall, fully-equipped sports science gym, and on an AstroTurf pitch. You will take part in lectures, practical sessions, project work and tutorials, learning from an experienced course team with expertise in many aspects of physical education and sports coaching.

Timetables are normally available one month before registration. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week.


You are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practicals. With small class sizes, you’ll enjoy quality contact time with lecturers, and the attention and support when you need it. In addition, you have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor. Contact time varies between modules, but typically comprises of around 2-3 hours contact per week for each module.

Independent learning

When not attending lectures, seminars and other timetabled sessions you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library and HE hubs

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning hours, and assessment activity plus field trips (where relevant), with each credit taken equating to a total study time of around 10 hours. Your actual contact hours may depend on the course you study. An indication of how much time allocated to different activities is included within course specification.

Teaching staff

You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes academics, professional practitioners with industry experience and technical officers.

The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Some modules may contain at least one piece of practice or 'formative' assessment for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark.

There is a formal or 'summative' assessment at the end of each module. Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

Method of assessment

The balance of assessment by examination and assessment by coursework depends to some extent on the modules that form part of your course. The majority of the courses offered at the College use coursework as the main method of assessment. Further information regarding the methods of assessment for your course can be obtained from the Course Manager.



You will receive feedback on all practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor. We normally aim to provide you with feedback on your assessment within 10 working days of hand-in.  

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve a BSc (Hons) in Physical Education and Coaching.

This course prepares you for a career in teaching and or coaching. During the course, you will be based in an educational or sports coaching setting, allowing you to gain valuable work experience and build contacts within your chosen field. This work experience, alongside the knowledge you have gained throughout the course, will enable you to apply for positions in the Multisports coaching and education field. It will also enable you to progress onto a PGCE in primary, secondary or further education.

Destination: Competing for Great Britain in the 4x100m

Desiree is a 200m World Youth Champion as well as being the fastest U18 in the world for 200m, and the fastest U20 in Europe over 200m. In 2014 she won Gold in the women’s 4x100m at the European Championships in Zurich.

Whilst competing at elite level athletics, Desiree has studied Sport Science at the Centre for Applied Sciences.

She was bestowed with the great honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron at the London 2012 opening ceremony. Desiree also won the Student of the Year Award for 2013.
