About the course

As a result of camera-phones, more photographs will be taken this year alone than have been taken in all of history. But what makes a good photo?  And do you have what it takes to be a good photographer? This creative course introduces you to the theory and history of photography, and allows you to develop your skills as a photographer.

5/C in English Language; 5/C or above in GCSE Art and Design or art and design related subject.

The emphasis on this course is on developing a sense of what makes an effective image and understanding the historical development of the photograph, its impact on society and our understanding of ourselves. You will need to be able to research and write coherent analyses and demonstrate consideration and imagination in your own work.

Assessment takes place regularly on the course to provide feedback to develop your visual artwork and written components. The course contains two assessed components: a personal investigation portfolio and an externally set assignment.

The course has a successful progression record to both Art Foundation Diplomas and visual arts related degree courses (including Photography). University of the Arts, London (UAL) and Ravensbourne are popular destinations of our students. Students who leave education, or take a gap-year, find work in design-related employment or internships.

I was able to express myself on the course

Elizabeth Willis

Elizabeth Willis

Studied: A Levels in Photography, English and Politics

Destination: BA in Photographic Art at the Arts University Bournemouth

She said: "City and Islington encouraged me to be myself, get creative and provided an amazing programme of study. I was able to express myself on the course and if I hadn't gone there, I wouldn't be where I am today. I would advise anyone to take the course, and consider the arts an option for higher education."
