About the course
This dynamic course provides young adults with a professionally focused, industry based preparation for Higher Education or work. The course has strong partnerships with local theatres, acting agents and creative organisations within Islington and Camden. Through these partnerships, the teaching team are able to offer a relevant, realistic actor and theatre training. You will be supported to enhance your individual characteristics and develop your talents so that you are fully prepared to present yourself to the professional industry. You will learn performance skills both physically and vocally, as well as looking in-depth at a range of acting and performance techniques. Making creative work as part of a company will be an integral part of the programme, as will regular input from external practitioners and experts, giving you a comprehensive understanding of this exciting industry. There is an emphasis on taking performance work out on tour to different communities and performing work that is responsive to current local, national and global issues.
Applicants should normally be aged 18 years and over and will need to have at least one of the following:a BTEC or other Level 3 qualification in Performing Arts or a related area;A GCE Advanced level profile, which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to Crelevant industry experience or currently working within the Creative Industry.
The overall course structure will consist of three diverse production assignments (including work placements where possible). Skills units in voice, movement and production will feed into these production assignments. Each assignment will place emphasis on a different aspect of the theatre industry for example: community theatre/arts, contemporary/urban drama or scene study for showcase to agents. Therefore unit learning outcomes will be integrated and cross mapped to suit the vocational scenario.
Timetables are normally available one month before registration. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week.
You are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practicals. With small class sizes, you’ll enjoy quality contact time with lecturers, and the attention and support when you need it. In addition, you have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor. Contact time varies between modules, but typically comprises of around 2-3 hours contact per week for each module.
When not attending lectures, seminars and other timetabled sessions you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library and HE hubs.
Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning hours, and assessment activity plus field trips (where relevant), with each credit taken equating to a total study time of around 10 hours. Your actual contact hours may depend on the course you study. An indication of how much time allocated to different activities is included within course specification.
You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes academics, professional practitioners with industry experience and technical officers.

The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Some modules may contain at least one piece of practice or 'formative' assessment for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark.
There is a formal or 'summative' assessment at the end of each module. Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.
Method of assessment
The balance of assessment by examination and assessment by coursework depends to some extent on the modules that form part of your course. The majority of the courses offered at the College use coursework as the main method of assessment. Further information regarding the methods of assessment for your course can be obtained from the Course Manager.
You will receive feedback on all practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor. We normally aim to provide you with feedback on your assessment within 10 working days of hand-in.
On achieving the HNC in Performing Arts you will be able to:

- Access the second year of a subject related course at University.
- Be prepared to audition for Drama School.

Destination: Lead role in BBC hit drama series Waterloo Road
Last year BTEC Performing Arts student, Armin Karminadaghi, secured a leading role in hit BBC drama series Waterloo Road. Armin initially wanted to study art and design, but did not do as well in his A Levels as he would have liked. However, he knew even from a young age that he had a natural ability for acting.
He said “I took the course at the College and my passion for acting just grew and grew. I have learnt so much from my teachers, who are not just teachers but friends. They are very inspiring, calm and provide you with the whole package to pursue a career in the industry.”
