SCASMUSMT

Music AS/A2 Level

About the course

This challenging and specialist course helps you to develop as a performer, a composer and as a musical thinker. Open minded musicians will enjoy the opportunity to learn about musical theory and study a very wide range of set works that encompass music ancient and modern, classical and popular.

1.Entry requirements

You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results

In addition, you must have

  • Grade 5/C or above in GCSE English Language
  • Grade 5/B or above in GCSE Music or grade 5 on an instrument
  • You will need to pass a pre-course audition and theory test. The audition may lead to a bridge course before the qualification begins.

International students:

  • Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
  • IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.

This course combines live performance with composition, music theory and the analytical appraisal of classical and other music, helping you to develop as a performer, composer and someone who engages with the history of music past and present. A succession of studies in composition will enable you to develop a portfolio of pieces and a score displaying your knowledge of melody, harmony, instrumentation and structure. Live performances over five terms will culminate in a final solo concert. Your skills in ear training and your knowledge of theory, history and analysis will develop through the study of three areas of musical history: western classical music 1650 – 1910, popular music and jazz. Students make musical friendships and connections, and study music theory in a very well-resourced and supportive environment.

All aspects of the course are externally examined: performance in a 10-minute solo recital at the end of term 5; composition in two pieces, one long, one short, one free choice, one a set style; and history, set works, aural skills harmony and theory in a 2-hour exam at eh end of the course. All students are also entered for ABRSM Grade 5 – 8 theory and receive instrumental and vocal lessons.

University, Music College, internships and professional workplace training, career starts. Students have embarked on the full range of options and have studied at all the major musical institutions in recent years.
