IT - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

About the course

Information Technology is the bedrock of most industries and businesses today. This two-year course is ideal for students who see their future in IT or computing. The first year provides a thorough grounding in IT use in modern industry, while the second year allows you to specialise in particular fields.

  • You'll need five GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English.
  • Alternatively, you'll need a Level 2 Diploma in IT with at least a Merit grade, with GCSE passes in English Language and Maths at grade C or above.

This course combines a wide range of theoretical and practical topics, giving you broad exposure to the world of computing. In year one you will study Hardware, allowing you to build your own computer, and in the second year, you will study Graphics and Animation, allowing you to design and build your own games. The second year also allows you to study a number of optional modules, depending on the field of IT you'd like to specialise in. In both years, you will study Networking, which will introduce you to Networks programming.

You will produce a portfolio of work for each of the 12 units, which will form the basis of your assessment. This will keep you informed on how you're doing, where you need to improve your skills, and what your specialisms should be.

If you pass with a Merit or Distinction, you will earn 180 UCAS points - equivalent to three A Levels. This will allow you to study an IT-related subject at university, or begin your career in IT. Former students have progressed to careers in systems analysis, database construction and graphic animation.
