Health and Social Care (Health Sciences) - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma
About the course
If you're a recent school leaver who wants to specialise in Health and Social Care either in Higher Education or at work, this course could be for you. Taking in everything from human anatomy and physiology to equality and diversity at work, this Extended Diploma will also give you valuable work experience.
You will need four GCSEs at grade C or above, including GCSE English. Alternatively, you can have a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care at merit level or above (including Level 1 English and Functional Skills).
All applicants will have a formal interview and assessment prior to enrolment. You must bring a reference from a school or employer.
You will study Effective Communication; Equality, Diversity and Rights; Anatomy and Physiology, Social Sciences and complete a research project. You will also go on placement to experience working in a Health and Social Care setting.
You will study Functional Skills in English and Maths.
Assessment is by coursework, work placement and final research project.
Passed with merit or distinction, a BTEC Extended Diploma is the equivalent of three A Levels, and opens up the opportunity for you to study Health, Social Sciences or a related field at University or Higher Education.
Alternatively, it allows for progression to more responsible positions in your workplace, particularly in areas such as Human Resources.

Studied: Diploma in Health and Social Care
Now working as a Senior Nursing Assistant at Guy’s Hospital
Ivone was working as a chef in London and caring for her husband. At the age of 49, Ivone decided that she wanted to return to education and work in the health care sector.
Last year she enrolled on a Diploma in Health and Social Care at the College’s Centre for Health, Social and Child Care. Now she is working as a Senior Nursing Assistant at Guy’s Hospital.
She said: “The decision to come back to the College was completely life changing and the best I have ever made. I had lost my confidence and did not think at my age that I would get another chance to work in the health care profession. I am so happy and I would encourage others who want to study again, but feel afraid, to do it.”
