German A Level
About the course
Language study is about creativity, critical thinking and communication. Studying a language will add an international dimension to your A levels and provide you with skills which employers and universities consider to be highly desirable. During this two year course you will build on what you have learnt at GCSE, developing your confidence to speak in public, use problem solving strategies and write coherently as well as understand more about Italy and Italian culture.
You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
In addition, you must have:
• Grade 5/B or above in a GCSE in the relevant language.
• Individual cases will be considered if you have a bilingual background.
• Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
• IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.
On this course, you will explore a wide range of topics, including: evolving society in Italy, political and artistic culture in Italian-speaking countries, immigration, and multiculturalism in Italy from Fascism to the present day. You will also study a book and a film, developing your skills of analysis. You will learn new grammar and vocabulary and consolidate it through translation into and out of Italian.
Assessment takes place regularly on the course to provide practice and feedback. The final exams will take place at the end of the second year and will include: Paper 1 (listening, reading and translation), Paper 2 (writing on the film and book and translation into Italian), Paper 3 (an oral exam).
A language at A Level is a highly regarded qualification and will support your application to many courses at university, including business, science management and tourism. It is also an essential component of a language or literature course. Many of our students choose to study a language in combination with other subjects or apply to study for other languages, such as Chinese or Japanese, from scratch. A language A Level adds an extra dimension to your personal skills profile which will impress people who read your CV and put you in a stronger position to get a job in companies with international links.
