Geography A Level

Geography AS/A2 Level

About the course

Building on GCSE Geography, this two-year course widens the scope from the physical characteristics of our landscapes to the way that human beings shape - and are shaped by - geography. This will involve a lot of study and discussion about why certain countries and areas have historically been deprived, and how we can master natural resources to improve the lot of the planet and the people on it.

You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results

In addition, you must have:

• Grade 5/C or above in GCSE English Language

• Grade 5/C or above in GCSE Maths

• At least a grade 6/B  in one other written GCSE subject e.g.History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature, Business, Media Studies, Religious Studies (full course)

International students:

• Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.

• IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.

In your first year, you will look at issues of climate change and natural disasters, the impact of globalisation and population migration, and how places are rebranded to change their image. Your fieldwork will be on the use and management of coasts.

In your second year, you will extend your understanding of the physical and human worlds through the theme of Contested Planet, which includes topics such as Superpower Geographies, Bridging the Development Gap, Water Conflicts and Energy Security. You will also examine the food supply problem through a research unit investigating Life on the Margins.

20% coursework based on field work research. Three final exams at the end of the second year.

Taken as one of three A Levels, Geography gives you the opportunity to progress to university or other Higher Education institutes. A Level Geography equips you with a range of skills and knowledge, which are good preparation for degrees in a wide variety of Humanities and Social Sciences courses. It is an excellent subject for developing your ability to think critically and analytically about social issues.
