What is this course about?

This course explores a range of health science theory and practice and will give you a solid understanding to progress on to higher level study.

Who is this course for?

People who wish to pursue a career in the health services sector.

What do I need to get on the course?

Four GCSEs at grade A*-C including science, English and maths, or BTEC First Diploma in Science with merit or distinction and key skills at Level 2. You must also have very good communication skills.

What will I study?

You will study biology, sociology and psychology, information technology and communication. You will also take part in a variety of work experience placements to give you a better understanding of the industry and the roles within it.

What qualification will I get?

BTEC National Diploma in Science Health Studies.

What can I do after the course?

On completion, you can study a range of health related degree courses, such as nursing, genetics, psychology, occupational therapy, nutrition, applied biology, pharmacology, biomedical or biological sciences, radiology, social work, chiropody, teaching and health services management. Where appropriate, students may opt to do Higher National Diploma courses or consider employment in the Health Services.

Home students aged 16-18 do not pay the course fee.

I really enjoyed the practical experience of the course, says Thandiwe, who studied Forensic Science BTEC National Diploma, whilst taking care of her family. Thandiwe is now at Queen Mary, University of London studying a degree in forensic science and would like to work for the Metropolitan Police or the Home Office in the future.
