About the course

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. Entry Level ESOL courses are for people who speak English as a second or other language, and who are resident or permanently settled in the UK.

These courses will help you to increase your independence, as well as developing the language skills you need for everyday life, employment and further study.

They take you through Entry Level 1 (Beginner), Entry Level 2, and Entry Level 3 to prepare you for a Level 1 ESOL or vocational course.

Classes run during the week in the morning, afternoon or evening. Courses are a year long, but you can join at various points between September and early March if there are places available.

You must be resident or permanently settled in the UK.

You will need to take a short test so that we can assess your level and enrol you on the best course for you. Just book an assessment or drop in during opening hours (see below).

Please bring your passport with you to book your assessment.

Finsbury Park Centre (Centre for Lifelong Learning, 28-42 Blackstock Road, Finsbury Park, N4 2DG)

Camden Road Centre (Centre for Business, Arts and Technology, 444 Camden Road, N7 0SP)

  • Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am-7pm

ESOL courses provide you with a thorough introduction to the English language, covering all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

There are courses that focus on improving reading and writing in English, and some Entry Level 2 and 3 courses also include Maths.

You will also study citizenship and employability.

Your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing will be assessed through examinations, and your tutor will advise you when you have the language skills needed to pass the exams.

You can progress through Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 to an ESOL Level 1 qualification, or to a vocational course.

After I finish my degree I would like to go into the field of medical research

Gobi Ongaranathan

Gobi Ongaranathan

Studied: ESOL progressing to a BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Medical Science

Destination: Studying Genetics at Queen Mary University of London

Gobi took an ESOL course at the College after he and his family arrived in London after fleeing civil war in Sri Lanka. After progressing to study Applied Science, he gained straight distinctions and is now studying genetics at Queen Mary’s University of London.

He said: “I was looking for an opportunity to learn English when I saw the City and Islington centre in Finsbury Park. They enrolled me on an ESOL course and I learnt as much English as possible in six months and then asked if I could begin to study Science subjects as that is my passion.”

“The College was like a home for me, I loved being there rather than staying at home. The lecturers and staff are really friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend the College as you get amazing teaching and facilities.

“After I finish my degree I would like to go into the field of medical research as I feel I have a lot to offer this area of work.”
