About the course

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESOL courses are for people who speak English as a second or other language to an intermediate level, and who are resident or permanently settled in the UK.

These courses aim to increase your opportunities for employment or further study, as well as improving your communication for everyday life.

Classes run during the week in the morning or afternoon. Courses are a year long, but you can join at various points between September and early March if there are places available.

You must be resident or permanently settled in the UK.

You will need to take a short test so that we can assess your level and enrol you on the best course for you. Just book an assessment or drop in during opening hours (see below).

Please bring your passport with you to book your assessment.

Finsbury Park Centre (Centre for Lifelong Learning, 28-42 Blackstock Road, Finsbury Park, N4 2DG)

  • Monday to Thursday 9am-7pm
  • Friday 9am-3pm

Camden Road Centre (Centre for Business, Arts and Technology, 444 Camden Road, N7 0SP)

  • Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am-7pm
  • Wednesday and Friday 8.30am-3.30pm

Contextualized ESOL courses develop your English language skills for working in various occupational areas, for example in care, in the office or in schools. They cover relevant themes such as child development or healthcare, depending on the particular focus of the course. You will develop all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Tutorials give you a chance to review and plan your progress.

Assessment is by examination in the skills of speaking and listening, reading and writing. Your tutor will advise when you have the language skills to pass the exams.

You can progress to a Level 1 ESOL qualification, or to a Vocational Course.

Courses cost up to £900 a year for a four-day-a-week course. However, if you are in receipt of income-tested benefits, you may be able to study for free or for a reduced fee. Please bring evidence of any benefits you currently receive, dated within the last six months, to your interview. You will be advised of any reduction in the course fees at the end of your interview.

Hosanna Makanda

Studied: ESOL progressing to study A Levels in English Language and Literature, French, History and Sociology

Now studying Law at the University of Birmingham

Hosanna Makanda came to the UK from war torn Congo in 2011. She spoke no English and had experienced very little education. Enrolling on an ESOL course at the College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning, her potential was spotted and she was encouraged to progress to A Levels. This summer she achieved an A*, two As and a B and is now studying Law at the University of Birmingham.

She said: “My teachers always made sure I had everything I needed and have inspired me to go to university. I have always wanted to be a lawyer as I have developed a need to defend other people.”
