English Literature A Level
About the course
English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and English Literature perhaps the most famous and popular of all national literatures. Immerse yourself in poetry, prose and drama in English and learn how English is truly a world literature.
• You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
In addition you must have:
• Grade 5/C or above in GCSE English Language.
• In addition, you must have achieved at least a grade 6/B in one other written subject, e.g. History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature, Business or Religious Studies.
• Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
• IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.
You will study and share ideas with your classmates about a wide variety of texts. The extensive reading you will undertake on this course includes poetry, prose and drama from different periods, including at least one play by Shakespeare, other texts written before 1900, and one text written after 2000. This breadth of study will enable you to consider the ways in which texts relate to one another and to literary traditions, movements and genres.
The assessment is 20% coursework and 80% written exam.
English A Level is one of the bedrock qualifications for success, whether you want to progress to Higher Education or into work. Taken as one of three A Levels, you will be able to progress to University. Taken alongside another Humanities subject - e.g. History or Drama - it can allow you to specialise in a particular field at Higher Education.
