"I am now living my dream"

Ahmad Khattab

Ahmad Khattab

Subjects: Maths, Physics, Computing, Electronics and Arabic

Destination: Now working as a Structural Engineer at WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff

When Ahmad Khattab initially joined City and Islington’s Sixth Form College his ambition was to become a Software Engineer. However, after a summer placement organised for him by the College’s careers service he decided that his future lay in civil engineering. After achieving three As in his A Levels in Maths, Computing and Electronics, Ahmad progressed to University College London (UCL) to study a degree in civil engineering. After completing his course is now working as a graduate structural engineer for one of the world's leading engineering firms.

He said: “I was shown a lot of support by the careers centre at City and Islington College who helped me find my passion and progress to one of the most prestigious universities in the world, despite my unorthodox background.

“Studying civil engineering and working in various construction firms has increased my passion for the field and I am now living my dream. I am passionate about bridges which I believe are essential to the development of societies from social, economic and environmental standpoints. I am now living my dream"

In his current role, he is working on Transport for London's Structures and Tunnels Investment Portfolio (STIP), which involves the design, repair and replacement works on Highbury Corner Bridge. Ahmad is also working on a protection scheme in Dunball, an area which was severely affected by the Somerset winter flooding of 2013/14. On top of this progression, Ahmad won the Goldsmid award for achieving the top mark for the final year of his Civil Engineering degree at UCL. He was also shortlisted as a finalist in the TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year awards in which he was recognised as one of the top ten undergraduates in the construction industry.

Asked what his ambitions are for the next five years, he said: “I aspire to gain chartered engineering status and would like to manage the delivery of bridge design projects worldwide. I want to contribute to delivering sustainable development through innovative solutions, skills and expertise. I would also like to be a role model for future engineers and a leader within the sector.”
